Windsor graduate meets with George Bush

A University of Windsor alumnus was one of three auto industry executive who met U.S. President George W. Bush to discuss climate change and the auto industry role.

Tom LaSorda (next to left arm of President Bush), who is the President and CEO of DaimlerChrysler, along with General Motors and Ford executives showcased their fuel alternative vehicles to U.S. Congress and promised to help combat climate change.

President George W. Bush surrounded by: (Left to Right) Rick Wagoner chairman and CEO of the General Motors Corporation, Alan Mulally president and CEO of the Ford Motor Company and Thomas LaSorda, CEO and president of the Chrysler Group of Daimler Chrysler.

General Motors, Ford, and DaimlerChrysler, have all heavily invested in fuel efficient technologies but the auto manufacturers stressed that the proposed 4 percent increase in gas mileage standards by the U.S. Congress might be detrimental to the stability of the North American auto industry.

Tom LaSorda, expressed that leveraging from existing technologies like the use of alternative fuels such as ethanol and biodiesel is one way to address safer emissions without placing the North American auto industry in jeopardy.

Mr. LaSorda graduated from the University of Windsor in 1977 with both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Commerce undergraduate degree. He then received a Master of Business Administration (MBA) also from the University of Windsor in 1980. In 1977, Mr. LaSorda started his professional career with Chrysler rival General Motors. He worked for GM for the next 23 years, joining the Chrysler Group in 2000.
