Carousel of the Nations

For four hours, students, faculty and staff members at the University of Windsor were captivated by the Carrousel of the Nations. The CAW student centre was infused with delectable world cuisine, hypnotic Aboriginal drumming, an African fashion show, world music and multicultural dance performances.

Among the participants were Master of Political Science student Bihter Tomen and second-year Psychology student Seda Suner who baked a flakey pastry stuffed with cheese called pogca. The two international students from Turkey wanted to share their culture, food, music and history with others at the Carrousel of the Nations.

"I find multiculturalism interesting and important because people get to know other cultures and countries," expressed Seda. "I met so many different people and after getting to know them and getting to know their cultures, I can see things from their point of view."

Seda's father, who also studied in Canada and eventually got his citizenship encouraged Seda to follow in his footsteps. Aside from a two-year stay in the United States in her early childhood, this is Seda's first stay in Canada. She intends to pursue her Masters upon completing her undergraduate degree in Psychology.

"I love music and I like psychology so a Masters in Music Therapy would be a good combination." Said seda. "I see myself using that when I go back home or, who knows, I might stay in Canada."

For Bihter, the political science student, the idea of multiculturalism is one she plans to take back with her to Turkey.

"How different ethnic or cultural groups can live together in harmony is something I value a lot and it is something that is working as a social and political system here," said Bihter. "There are lots of opportunities for everyone here regardless of your race or group affiliation."

Assistantship positions, funding opportunities and an international campus feel are a few reasons why Bihter, who got her Political Science undergrad degree from York University, chose to do her Masters program in Political Science at the University of Windsor.

Aside from teaching political science introductory courses and pursuing her own graduate studies, Bihter is a research assistant at the Centre for Flexible Learning. The objective of the centre is to promote and support effective teaching and learning techniques among faculty and students.

Bither's research involves rating different academic problems that some students experience and then developing workshops and programs that help the faculty to incorporate writing across curriculums.

"Because writing is part of learning we are in touch with the academic writing centre to focus on the needs and the problems students are encountering." explained Bither. "It is better for students to write well in order to be better thinkers because when they write they can learn how to organize their ideas."

Immediate plans upon graduation for Bither is to return to Turkey and establish a career in political-journalism.
